Something special happens when we love sweating in a way that strengthens, releases and keeps us well. I believe that MOVEment is the single most powerful innate gift.
Having pulled myself off the piano bench at age 18 to start a slow jog around a single block in our small town, I knew instantly that working out would now be a constant in my life. It freed my mind and my body finally was humming. Getting certified as an “aerobics instructor” was the next logical progression in those days and I pumped out high knee lifts and grapevines all throughout University. During my 10 year business career with Reuters I was a regular in the weight room and when the babies arrived and we moved to Connecticut it was a double stroller and long hilly walks after work. Returning to Canada with two small children inspired me to make a career switch. I got re-certified, added more to my repertoire and began volunteering and working at a few gyms. After launching Tread Powerfully in 2008 I couldn’t have imagined all the learning I would go through as I watched members move, listened to their stories and felt myself in my own skin. The single biggest awakening occurred over a couple years when I realized that pushing my body to exhaustion, constant soreness and even injury was so contrary to my desire to feel well. It sounds so basic and yet it isn’t easy to pull away from the intense societal push we often feel to do more instead of finding what personally is “just enough”. When I listened, when I watched and when I accepted, I created a new outlook, took the pressure off and in turn I finally felt connected. Personal transformation was reflected in a business name change and re-commitment to the pursuit of wellness after 10 years in this business.
I am the owner of MOVE, a fitness and wellness community that offers signature strength and yoga classes and personal training. My classes reflect my love of different movement forms as I encourage my members to design a MOVEment profile for themselves that combines time with me, on their own and with other movement specialists.
